ABOUT US

InStone, Inc. has been serving vintage cigar label art collectors for more than 10 years. We believe in building long-term relationships with our clients and realize you have a large  investment in your art…so we’re here to make sure you have the best experience possible as you build and enjoy your collection.

Cigar label art has been collected for well over a hundred years. These colorful mini masterpieces are the advertising art designed to decorate cigar boxes and entice buyers into choosing a particular brand. At the turn of the 20th century, cigars were all the rage, so artwork had to really stand out to be noticed among the thousands of other brands.

Originally, labels were found in old warehouses, salesmen sample books, Victorian scrapbooks and other caches. No more than a couple thousand of the most common labels have been found; while some labels exist in higher quantities, it’s more typical to find only one or two of each label. This makes cigar label art collecting an exciting challenge and offers you the opportunity to have some possibly unique labels in your collection.

Stop by often to see our newest labels available for purchase. Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter, which provides the most current cigar label art news as well as access to our members-only area at InstoneInc.com, including the Sold Gallery.

At InStone, Inc., we focus on quality, an element that’s remembered long after price is forgotten.

InStone Inc. History

InStone, Inc. was born out of our love for vintage cigar label art. We were introduced to cigar labels at the Long Beach Coin &
Collectibles Show, and they made quite a first impression. We marveled over the beauty, intricacy and detail of the artwork, which
made vintage cigar label art stand out from the assortment of other vintage paper and advertising art at the show. Not surprisingly, we learned that many famous artists of their day were responsible for creating these beautiful works of art, which we consider mini-masterpieces.

Learning about the painstaking stone lithography process that was used to make these labels only added to our interest. It’s amazing to realize that they printed these labels with giant Bavarian stone carvings (using one stone for each color). That arduous and costly process surely could not be duplicated today, making these labels a truly unique collectible.

The haphazard, almost accidental way that various titles have survived over the years is a mystery. Finding people who have them stashed
in an attic or in an old warehouse, or tucked away in the family bible is like a treasure hunt. Labels from the 1800s that have managed to survive and maintain their beauty are indeed rare.

These labels come from an exciting period of our country’s history, 1870-1930. Many of them depict the rich history and flamboyance of America at that time. The diversity of the subject matter is remarkable; there are labels for every collector! Many people collect them just
as cigar labels, others collect them to frame as works of art, and still others find ways to integrate them into their own creative endeavors. Whatever your interest, we hope you’ll find “your” labels.

InStone's buyer travels extensively looking for cigar label art. We’re always buying, because we’re always looking for more beautiful and interesting labels to add to our inventory. Since stone lithographic cigar label art is an under-appreciated art form, it offers quality and value for long-term collectors. As the market for these mini-masterpieces grows, their rarity and beauty will be fully realized and prices will likely rise.
